what is this "bonus" and "a.i.g." that the news is talking about? Join or Log In to answer.
Despite getting lots of money from the government, AIG has still decided to pay what many consider insalely large bonuses to their CEOs.Many are upset because those same CEOs ran the company in the ground,so why should they get big bonuses?

the only problem is, we need these morons to get us out of this mess because they are the only ones who understand the complex calculations used on all these mortgage backed securities... so that means we need to pay them a bit to keep them around.. sucks but we dont have much of a choice

I don't necessarily believe anyone in this equation is irreplaceable, but I still concur with your general point. I hit on something near that with my second answer to this person's question.

A.I.G. is one of the companies that was bailed out. They then turned around and handed out $165 million in bonuses to executives, creating outrage in the Obama administration (and with the public).
-BunnyBurnstein (0Q / 101A) Tue Mar 17, 2009 9:12am

The Obama administration has stated it will try to stop this gratuitous bonus giving. Odds are good that AIG would stand to lose more money from NOT honoring its pre-existing bonus contracts than to just pay the greedy S.O.B.s

the other problem would be if the govt starts ripping up contracts that would set a really bad precedent that its ok to just throw contracts out the window... business as we know it would be compromised... and then no one will be signing any deals with anyone... now thats a sticky situation...
-bigmike (44Q / 5475A) Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:33am

(To bigmike)
During takeovers of weak or failing companies, new owners always hire new management. Why? Because the old management sucked, which is why the company needed bailing out.
Also the govt twisted the banks' arms to create contracts that were riskier than previously allowed, opening the door for the very nightmare we're in now. Heads need to roll, both in the private sector for mismanagement and the government sector for accountability on taxpayer dollars wasted.
-gomerpyle91 (101Q / 366A) Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:36am

(To gomerpyle91)
the problem is that there's a short supply of qualified guys who actually understand these instruments that are causing the problems right now... i wouldnt say the govt "twisted" their arms but they certainly encouraged it with 10 years of low ass interest rates... we need to get the banking system back on its first for anything to change
